Announcing our Deprecated Books Repo!

We’re excited to announce that we’ve made our older, deprecated books free to everyone. Come see which books we’re releasing for all to enjoy!

We’ve been producing books at raywenderlich.com since iOS 5 came out, and that was…well, a long time ago!

As platforms progress, as frameworks change, and as the focus of our community changes, there are always some books that we decide just don’t need to be updated; either the technology isn’t that popular anymore, or this book has been replaced by a newer, shinier book. So over the years, we’ve built up a small catalogue of our deprecated books.

But the question in the back of our minds has always been: What do we do with these deprecated books? We can’t sell them in good faith, because they won’t be updated as we do with our other, newer books. And they still have massively valuable content inside (even if some of it is in Objective-C!). So we don’t just want to banish them to the bookshelf of obscurity forever.

So instead, we’ve decided to make our older books freely available to our community, to make sure anyone and everyone can benefit from some great information that might not be completely up-to-date, but still holds a lot of value for developers around the world.

How Do You Access the Deprecated Books Repo?

We’ve set up a small repository to house links to all of our deprecated books. You can find it at the link below:

From there, you can find links to our complete book packages, which include PDFs, ePUBs, and complete source code for the books:

So, to be clear, you don’t have to clone this repo, as it’s just serving as an easy place to host these book links.

What Can You Use the Books For?

So the books are freely available to all, but we did need to set out a few guidelines on what you can and can’t do with the books, since we want to be sure the great work of our book teams is respected and treated fairly!

In particular, here’s what you can and can’t do with the contents of this repository:

  • You are allowed to use and/or modify the source code provided in the books in this repository in as many apps as you want, without needing to attribute it back to us.
  • You are allowed to use and/or modify all art, images and designs that form part of the source code in this repository in as many apps as you want, but must include this line somewhere inside your app: “Artwork/images/designs: from www.raywenderlich.com”.
  • The source code and books included in this repository are for your personal or educational use only. You are NOT allowed to sell the source code OR the book content in this repository.
  • All materials provided in this repository are provided on an “as is” basis, without warranty of any kind, express or implied.
  • We can’t provide any kind of support for these books or their source code; your best bet is to ask on our forums at forums.raywenderlich.com to see if anyone has experience with the older versions of the books.
  • All trademarks and registered trademarks appearing in this guide are the properties of their respective owners.

For those detail-minded people out there, there’s a full license file in the repository — and all books and source code also have complete licenses contained inside.

Where to Go From Here?

So, have at it! Even if the projects inside the books don’t compile with the latest and greatest frameworks and IDEs, there’s still a wealth of knowledge to be gained from the contents of these books. We encourage you to share this resource widely, and if we do deprecate more books in the future, be assured we’ll add those books to this collection.

On behalf of the entire book team at raywenderlich.com, we hope that you enjoy this collection of books, and that they help you learn something new!
